Description

Handcrafted in Yamagata Prefecture by Tobisho (Tobizuka Shears Works), the SR-2 180mm (Model 390) is a high-performance Japanese bypass pruning shear engineered for exceptional maneuverability, comfortable grip, and long-lasting razor sharpness.

Unlike conventional mass-produced shears, the SR-2 series features full-steel forging made entirely from high-grade Japanese high-carbon cutlery steel (approx. 1% carbon content). While full-steel forging with high-carbon steel is traditionally challenging due to wear on drop-forging dies, Tobisho perfected this technique to achieve a tool that is exceptionally hard, retains a razor-sharp edge for an extended period (Nagagire), yet remains remarkably lightweight and nimble in the hand. The precision shape is initially die-forged and then meticulously finished by hand across over 200 process steps—including heat treatment (~800°C), distortion alignment, edge grinding, and final crossover assembly—by master blacksmiths.

Key Features & Craftsmanship:

3D Curved Urasuki (Hollow Ground Back): The back of the main cutting blade is precision-ground into a subtle three-dimensional concave curve rather than a flat surface. This dramatically reduces friction between the blades, prevents tree sap (Yani) and resin buildup, and maintains effortless cutting action.

Precision Hinari (Crossover Alignment): The counter-blade incorporates a subtle twist angle (Hinari), ensuring the cutting edges meet at an exact single "point" rather than across a broad surface as they close. This enables clean, razor-sharp shearing through live wood with minimal hand force, leaving smooth branch cuts that promote plant health and prevent disease.

SR-2 Compact Ergonomics: Measuring 185mm in overall length with a 54mm blade (from bolt center), the SR-2 profile features comfortable handle contours optimized for medium to smaller hands, offering outstanding control during intensive daily pruning in orchards and gardens.

Traditional Brass Catch (Kana-dome): Equipped with a classic brass bottom handle latch to secure the handles safely when not in use.
