Description
Handcrafted in Yamagata Prefecture by Abukumagawa Sokan, the Tsugaru-Type 195mm Leather Latch Edition is a heavy-duty, field-tested Japanese bypass pruning shear engineered specifically for rigorous orchard maintenance and cutting tough, dense timber. Created by the historic workshop that forged Japan’s very first secateurs in 1870, the Tsugaru profile was evolved to meet the demanding needs of Aomori apple orchardists who prune extremely hard wood all day long.
The hallmark of the Tsugaru-Type lies in its specialized blade grind. The primary blade is forged with a wider, reinforced spine that tapers steeply down to a surgical cutting edge. Combined with precision 3D concave hollow grinding (Urasuki) and twisted crossover alignment (Hinari), this distinct profile bites into stubborn branches instantly and delivers an incredible, fluid "slice-through" feel with minimal friction.
To prevent fatigue during long commercial pruning sessions, an internal shock-absorbing cushion spring dampens the violent end-of-cut recoil, protecting the hand, wrist, and elbow joints. Hand-forged entirely from high-carbon special cutlery steel using centuries-old swordsmithing techniques, it is completed with an elegant genuine leather handle catch for quiet, comfortable storage.
Key Features & Craftsmanship:
Pioneer Japanese Heritage: Crafted by Abukumagawa Sokan, the original workshop credited with creating Japan's first pruning shears in 1870, backed by over 200 years of swordsmithing tradition.
Tough Tsugaru Orchard Geometry: Purpose-built for cutting dense, hard timber (such as apple and fruit trees) without flexing, binding, or edge damage.
Tapered Wide-Spine Grind: Features a wide, structural blade spine tapering into an acute razor edge, ensuring deep initial bite and effortless branch penetration.
Internal Recoil Cushion Spring: Integrated shock-dampening spring mechanism absorbs violent end-of-cut impact, dramatically reducing wrist and arm fatigue.
Full Steel Swordsmith Forging: Forged entirely from high-grade Japanese high-carbon cutlery steel for supreme toughness, long edge holding (Nagagire), and easy whetstone resharpening.
3D Curved Urasuki & Hinari Alignment: Concave back reduces metal friction and sap buildup, while precise crossover twist alignment creates clean, healthy branch cuts.
Traditional Genuine Leather Latch (Kawa-dome): Finished with a classic leather handle strap that locks quietly and comfortably without biting into the hand.
