### A Muromachi Legacy: The Spirit of Chanoyu & Kyoto Zen

The Zendoji Lantern (Zendoji-gata Tōrō) is a rare and artistically whimsical hexagonal stone lantern inspired by the Muromachi Period (1336–1573) original masterpiece (Honka) preserved at Zendoji Temple in Kiyamachi, Kyoto.

Unlike conventional architectural lanterns, the Zendoji style is intimately tied to the aesthetic evolution of the Japanese Tea Ceremony (Chanoyu). Revered by master gardeners and tea practitioners since the Edo Period, its bold, grounded presence and playful artistic details make it one of the most distinctive "specialty class" (Tokushu-gata) lanterns in Japanese landscape design.

### DISTINCTIVE ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES & CRAFTSMANSHIP

1. Intricate Tea Ceremony Utensil Reliefs (Chadogu Carvings)

The defining hallmark of the Zendoji Lantern lies in the detailed relief carvings adorning its fire chamber (Hibukuro). Each of the hexagonal faces features sacred tools of the traditional tea ceremony:

- Clay Teapot (Dobin)

- Tea Caddy (Natsume) & Bamboo Tea Scoop (Chashaku)

- Tea Bowl (Chawan) & Bamboo Whisk (Chasen)

- Charcoal & Charcoal Basket (Sumi-kago) or Iron Trivet (Gotoku)

These relief carvings infuse the stone with a quiet narrative of warmth, hospitality, and mindful tea culture.

2. Bold, Grounded Proportions & Stately Balance

In comparison to slender shrine lanterns, the Zendoji model features a thicker, robust central pillar (Sao) paired with a wider, voluptuous canopy (Kasa), lotus middle pedestal (Chudai), and jewel top (Hoju). This intentionally broad geometry gives the lantern an extraordinarily stable, grounded, and magnificent aesthetic presence.

3. Hand-Carved from Premium Natsuyama Granite

Sculpted by master stone masons in Okazaki, Japan, using authentic Natsuyama Granite. Over time, the fine-grained granite ages beautifully in outdoor environments, cultivating a rich, moss-draped Wabi-Sabi patina that blends seamlessly into classic Japanese tea gardens (Roji).
