Description
Handcrafted in Ono City, Hyogo Prefecture—the celebrated home of 250-year-old Banshu blacksmithing traditions—by Azumagawa Shears Works (est. 1898), the Mini Matsuba Pine & Bud Pruning Shears Single-Edged 165mm is a compact, high-precision Japanese shear designed for intricate pine pruning (Metsumi), fine bud clipping, and delicate bonsai maintenance.
Featuring a classic Japanese Matsuba (Pine-Needle) handle profile, this shear is intentionally sized to sit comfortably within the palm. This unique design allows arborists, gardeners, and bonsai specialists to hold the shear securely in the palm while keeping fingers free to manipulate branches, needle-pluck, or tie shoots without constantly picking up and putting down the tool.
Forged through an intense 50-step in-house manufacturing process, each pair is hand-hammered from high-carbon cutlery steel and undergoes Azumagawa's signature full-body thermal heat treatment (Maruyaki). The single-edged (Kataba) blade offers razor-sharp chisel-like precision, perfect for flush-cutting delicate buds and shoots with minimal disturbance to surrounding foliage. Each pair is hand-adjusted for exact 3D hollow back-grinding (Urasuki) and crossover alignment (Hinari), providing an exceptionally smooth blade glide for clean, stress-free cuts.
Key Features & Craftsmanship:
Compact Matsuba Palm Profile: Sized to fit comfortably inside the palm, enabling continuous field use while keeping hands free for delicate branch adjustments.
Single-Edged (Kataba) Geometry: Specialized single-bevel edge delivers clean, razor-sharp flush cuts ideal for pine candling, bud thinning, and precise bonsai work.
Banshu Hand-Forged Heritage: Handcrafted by Azumagawa (est. 1898) using 120+ years of blacksmithing expertise across a 50-step complete in-house forging process.
Whole-Blade Hardening (Maruyaki): Heat-treated through the entire body of the steel for supreme blade strength, edge holding, and impact resistance.
Master Urasuki & Hinari Alignment: Concave inner blade grinding minimizes friction and sap adhesion, paired with hand-tuned crossover geometry for whisper-quiet operation.
High-Carbon Cutlery Steel: Delivers outstanding razor-sharp edge retention (Nagagire) and effortless maintenance on traditional whetstones.
