OVERVIEW & CONCEPT
Refined simplicity born from the heart of the Japanese tea ceremony.
The Sunshoan (寸松庵) lantern is celebrated as one of "Japan’s Three Great Freestanding Stone Lanterns" (日本三大置型石灯籠), alongside the famous Katsura Imperial Villa lanterns.
Dispensing with a tall central column (Sao) or heavy base, the Sunshoan consists primarily of a gracefully proportions roof (Kasa) and a solid firebox (Hibukuro). Standing at a compact height of just 36cm (1.3 Shaku), its understated, noble presence brings an instant touch of "Japanese Modern" elegance to private entryways, courtyards (Tsuboniwa), or tranquil garden alcoves.
HERITAGE & TEA CULTURE STORY
- The Legacy of Sakuma Shogen:
The lantern derives its poetic name from "Sunshoan," the famous tea house retreat built by Sakuma Shogen Sanekatsu—a renowned 17th-century samurai, master tea practitioner, and disciple of Sen no Rikyu’s aesthetic lineage.
- The Spirit of "Wabi":
Crafted specifically for intimate tea garden pathways (Roji), its low-profile silhouette was designed to guide guest's feet with a soft, warm candle glow without disrupting the quiet, rustic harmony of the surrounding moss and bamboo hedges. The original historic masterpiece ("Honka") remains preserved at the world-heritage Ninna-ji Temple's Hito-tei tea house in Kyoto.
CRAFTSMANSHIP & DETAILS

- Natural Patina: Carved from natural Japanese granite, it naturally welcomes moss and rustic weathering over time, seamlessly blending into both classic Japanese gardens and contemporary architectural landscapes.
